1. Assessment

The initial session will normally take an hour. We take a history of your child’s difficulties, followed by an assessment of their speech and language. Further assessment may be needed but it will usually be established within this time if speech and language therapy is appropriate for your child at this stage.

2. THERAPY SESSIONS

There is no typical session as each is designed specifically to meet your child’s needs, abilities, personality, learning style and so on. We use methods and approaches that we know from experience are very effective and that research has shown to be ‘best practice’.

While we create a treatment plan at the outset, there is a lot of room for flexibility depending on how your child is doing. We regularly evaluate how they are responding and give you feedback after every session. We’re always available to answer any questions you may have.

We are firm believers in teamwork at Suretotalk. A child or young person makes more rapid progress if encouraged and supported at home.  An integral part of the programme are activities given to you to work at home with your child during the week.

Children learn to speak and say certain sounds at different ages. All children are different but here is a general guideline.

A child will normally:

• use a few words at 12 - 18 months though they may not be articulated correctly
• have around 50 words at 2 years
• be able to follow directions at 2 years, for example, “show me your shoe”, “where is your nose?”
• at 3 years be able to put words together to make simple phrases
• at 4 years be able to use sentences with 4 - 5 plus words and use grammar that’s mainly correct
• be able to be understood by everyone by 4 years, and have a large vocabulary

A speech and language therapist can assess your child’s phonology and articulation and whether your child is developing normal speech patterns or there are areas that need work.

If there is any topic you would like SuretoTalk to cover or if you would like your child assessed please contact us today.

My 3-year-old son started with Jocelyn after he received grommets. He LOVES the sessions, and can’t wait to go every week. I like the way Jocelyn integrates games and activities into the sessions so they really are fun.
